I removed a thick carpet pad and also carpet so the cap that I was adding, was a wash, in my opinion. I totally wish I had stairs now (I live in a one floor condo....one day!) The finish nailer didn't leave big holes, just tiny ones that I filled in with dark colored wood putty.
